Moments in Time

A Ghanaian Shea Collective
Picking and processing shea, which is used worldwide in the confectionary and cosmetic industries, provides income for over 4 million women across West Africa. Nearly a fifth of all shea exports come from Ghana's northern region. At one co-op near Tamale, the region's capital, about a dozen women process the nuts that they harvest. Historically and traditionally considered women's work, the business provides a source of income, but is hard work — and dangerous. Shea trees only grow in the wild, so the women must get up early in the morning and risk being bitten by snakes and scorpions while harvesting nuts.

Bolivia
Both the poorest country in South America and the one with the greatest mix of cultures, Bolivia is a place with unbelievable landscapes and occasionally tragic beauty. Both the government and nonprofit organizations, such as Mano a Mano, work to fight the poverty that encompasses much of the countryside. A few sentences or a few pictures cannot communicate the unique experience of every Bolivian, but it can provide a glimpse into this ecologically and culturally diverse nation.

Individual Stills
Some photographs don't fit in, and they exist simply on their own. The camera captures them, but not as part of a story. When a photographer travels everywhere with his or her camera, there are bound to be isolated, unclassifiable moments.
